About

Hello! My name is Steph Morris. I am currently studying Contemporary Textile Design at the University Center of Blackburn College, in England. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques and materials, for me it makes things really exciting and opens up whole new possibilities within my work.
I love having the feeling of fascination. When you see something you find interesting it can be instantly alluring, and you revert back to that childlike feeling of curiosity and wonder.

I am mainly inspired by the Victorian way of life, and the use of animals in this era. Their eagerness to know and understand the world around them kept them in a pursuit to rule nature. They were amazed and attracted to the wonders of the world, collecting, preserving and recording: genetic deformities, taxidermy, elements of the human body and studying anything that was relatively unknown to man. These things kept them in awe. These things fascinate me. This is the reason I have an eye for the unusual, anything strange, odd and bizarre, as I feel things out of the ordinary are far more challenging and fun. They raise awareness to the forgotten, peculiar side of life that humans and animals have.

I weave these ideas into my art by experimenting with different mediums such as fabric or latex.  My main areas of interest are drawing, CAD, and 3D construction. I work organically from a large bank of imagery, often creating sculptural 3D pieces with the intention of them to be tactile. This way they can be touched and explored,in an attempt to bring my work onto a closer, more personal level with the audience. I feel that art should be interactive, make people more inquisitive and get them thinking with an open mind.

At the moment, I don't particularly have an exact specialization within my area, and I don't particularly know where my art work is going. My goal for the end of my degree course is to have this, and work it to the best of my ability.
Career wise? I don't know this either! But my main ambition is to create/sell/exhibit pieces of art for everyone and anyone that are strange, fun, and tactile!

Everything I do, is a working process towards finding the path my life will take. So I hope you find my blog interesting, enjoy it, and come back to keep up to date with my progress!

Thanks for visiting.
